Why We Use 100% Soy Wax
At CandleTree, the foundation of every candle we make is pure soy wax. Here's why we chose it.
A Natural Alternative to Paraffin
Paraffin wax — the most common candle wax on the market — is a petroleum byproduct. Soy wax is derived from soybeans, a natural and renewable agricultural crop grown widely across the United States. When we decided to build CandleTree around soy wax, it came down to what we were comfortable putting into a product people burn in their homes.
Less Soot, Cleaner Glass
Soy wax tends to produce less visible soot than petroleum-derived paraffin wax. If you have ever used a paraffin candle and noticed black residue building up on the glass or on walls and ceilings above the candle, that is the byproduct of a petroleum-based burn. Soy wax burns differently — the glass on a well-maintained soy candle stays noticeably cleaner over time. Wick trimming and proper burn habits matter too; see our Candle Care guide for details.
A Lower Burn Temperature
Soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin. This has a few practical effects: the wax pool takes a bit longer to form on the first burn, which is why we always recommend allowing a full melt pool to the edge of the glass before extinguishing. The lower temperature also means the candle works through the wax more gradually, contributing to a longer overall burn for the same volume of wax.
Fragrance Throw
A candle's fragrance throw — how well the scent fills a room — depends significantly on how the fragrance oil is held and released by the wax. Soy wax binds fragrance oil effectively and releases it as the wax pool warms, allowing the scent to spread gradually through a room. We pair our soy wax with high-quality fragrance oils selected specifically for how they perform in soy — not just how they smell in the bottle.
Grown in the USA
We source our soy wax from American growers. By choosing soy, you are supporting domestic agriculture and a renewable resource. It is a practical material choice that also happens to align with buying local and supporting American farming.
